    Red face Baird Tartan

My mothers family is orig. from scotland. Her last name is beard. We were told my fathers family was scottish too but now not sure. Should I wear my mothers tartan since i know for sure where her family is from? I know her tartan is Baird, and family from Aberdeen. What do you suggest?

Welcome. That sounds fine to me. Some people like to have a sure connection to a clan, others pick a tartan because they like it. Guess it's up to how you feel about it.
    Hope you enjoy the forum.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

We have Scottish Beards/Bairds in our family. There are quite a few Bairds in Aberdeenshire and Buchan.

Obviously tracing your ancestors to Scotland is the surest way to know, but I wouldn't say you couldn't wear it.

If you like your maternal tartan, then by all means wear it - 50% of your DNA comes from your mother after all...

    best regards

    Wear what you like.

    Welcome to XMarks, lass!

The rule is: there are no rules. You wear the tartan you like for whatever reason you care to use to justify it. Nobody with an ounce of sense will take you to task for wearing a tartan for which you have no familial affiliation.

That said, many of us feel the attraction to tartans that, in some way, connect us to our roots. Your mother's Baird tartan certainly does that for you. Should you wear your mother's tartan? Only if you you want to.

    Post Bairds & Auchmedden

One seat of the Bairds in Aberdeenshire was Auchmeddan. Thomas the Rhymer reportedly said, As long as the eagles nested on the cliffs of Pennen, there would be Bairds in Auchmedden.

The Clan Baird Society has an interesting history of the Bairds on their web site:
