Do I get insulted? No, but my response and attitude about it are determined by the circumstances.
-If it's a cultural or linguistic thing, I blow it off. I can think of two examples of that-
1. Bishop Joseph- He's from the middle east, and english is not his native language. How is he supposed to know that the english word is "kilt"
2. I wore my kilt to a friens's wedding. The bride's family is from Mexico. Again, not native english speakers. He knew that "skirt" was wrong, and I "educated" him about the kilt. He had trouble pronouncing "kilt" and "scottish," so I told him that calling it a "celtic man-skirt" was good enough for me because I appreciated his cultural sensativity.
-If it's out of legitimate ignorance, I ususally attempt to educate and inform.
-If somebody's just being a prick, well, guess what... I can be a prick right back.

I nearly always just laugh and never let 'em see me sweat, even if they are being jerks. If you keep laughing and telling them "it's not a skirt, it's a kilt. gentlemen wear kilts," then there's little else you can do.
It's especialy good when some jerk's girlfriend is obviously intrigued by a man in a kilt. Even an old beat-up geezer like me still gets a little attention from ladies when I am kilted. If I am not kilted, I'm just another old grandfather who is past his prime. But in a kilt . . .well, the possibilities are endless!

I am slow to take offense...... I think the vast majority of people who would say "Nice skirt." just do so to get a rise out of the kilt wearer. Why should I give them the satisfaction? If it's a person who doesn't know any better, then educate them - "A rose by any name would smell as sweet!" - A kilt by any name is still a kilt, and we know, so why worry about it?
I think the best response to it is - Shake your head, smile and say- - "Thanks!"

My typical exchange:
Idiot: "Nice Skirt"
ME: "Thanks.... those are great PAJAMAS you're wearing."
Idiot: "I'm not wearing pajamas"
ME: "and I'm not wearing a skirt".

No matter who says it, or in what manner they say it, I simply reply with a polite "thank you" and a smile. Not that I have heard it for years, because I don't think I have! Am I insulted? No, of course not, because they are actually speaking the truth!
If some unruly, immature idiot is out for trouble, there is absolutely no point in throwing fuel on his fire and making the situation worse by responding impolitely or aggressively. Take the wind out of their sails by acknowledging the 'compliment' gratefully. That's my policy.
Take care,
Ham.
