I haven't seen patterns for a rob-roy on line, but there are some good plans for nice sporran in the late J. Charles Thompson's book "So You're Going To Wear The Kilt" - In my copy (third Edition) it's on page 114. They sell the book ..here..

Quality leather can be purchased from a company called Tandy Leather. Information on Tandy Leather Company can be found ..here..

I use 6/7 oz vegtan for the lid and stiffener, and 3/4 oz heavy chap leather for the bag. I personally have to feel the chap leather to get a side with the right hand (softness).

I have drawn up a design which mimics the ribbed typed of Buzz Kidder sporran. I dislike the rigid front and back of the commercial sporrans - which is why I learned to do this myself. It seems to me that the ribbed type of sporran incorporates a bit more expandability than most non-inverness types sporrans. Have you thought about the ribbed sporran design?
