Chicago Kilt Stores?
Does anyone know of a decent kilt store (or cletic store I suppose) in the Chicago area preferably around the Napperville / O'hare area? Will be up that way in a couple of weeks and would like to get to a shop if possible. In particular looking for a sgian dubh, but would like to look at other accessories also.
Thanks for the help.

As they say in New Jersey: fahgedabbahdit.
There is one. That one is:

...and it is nowhere near O'Hare or Naperville.
Though I haven't had the pleasure (?) of getting to this particular shop, I have it on good authority that the proprietor is something of a "character", to use a polite euphemism. Their hours are, reportedly, rather erratic.

Scottish Modern is in a SW burb. Not a great neighborhood. I know of an Irish import shop at/near O'Hare. Oak Park has another.

You are correct. The word that first came to mind was "surly."
They have some neat stuff, but I haven't been there in about five years.

That's a bit of a flight...Anchorage was the refueling stop on the flight to Tokyo and I was saying "are we there yet? No? How much longer IS this flight?"
Okay...massive Chicago kilt night, anyone?

Alaska Airlines runs Anchorage direct ORD - about 5½ hours enroute and 2,470 NM. AA - I'll send you a PM to see if we can meet up while we're in town.

Honestly? Scottish Shop isn't in that bad of a neighborhood. I'm actually about 2-3 miles from there. (63rd and Archer, if I remember right) I've taken the bus routes right to the shop (some of the lines terminate about 2 blocks away from the shop) and nothing looked that bad to me. Then again, people tend to leave me alone no matter where I go cause I look pissed off all the time. ;)
South WEST is actually far better than the "dreaded" south side that everyone speaks of. I'm a mile from Midway and in a safe neighborhood.
As far as the shop itself? Pretty run down. Mostly rentals. Don't go there expecting a kilt selection. What's on the racks to buy are mostly retired rentals or things that will never fit anyone. I went there last year to buy some new hose. It actually would have been cheaper to import it from Scotland. Majority of the stuff was overpriced.
Oh, and they smoke inside the shop. So yeah, nothing will smell clean.

That sums up my recollection pretty well. My last visit wasn't AS grim, but pretty close. The selection wasn't as bad.
