It's a fine idea. Though the drummer is going to have to play on the rim if he doesn't want to drown out the piper, if there's only one of each. ;)

Eh, if you use small sticks and really control your velosity/stick heights, you'll be ok... you need good low-end chops for that job, though.

This is a non-starter assuming both musicians are competent.

I regularly play wedding gigs with my drummer and the worst it ever sounded was wonderful.

As long as your hired piper doesn't have a head-bangin', goodtime rock'n roller for an accompanying percussionist, the drummer'll be fully aware how to control his drumhead and compliment the pipes.

You've got lotsa other things to worry about - this isn't one of them.

you can muffle a drum. some napkins or sock usually does the trick.

The combination of smallpipes and bodhran would create an elegant effect indoors, and as with most things in life elegance trumps volume IMHO.

Now that I think to ask, will this be a full "highland" wedding?
Bride and bridesmaids all in her tartan, Groom and groomsmen in his tartan, minister in tartan, scottish themed decoration and setting, guests in their respective tartan, that sort of thing is what I mean by a highland wedding.

If not, a set of GHP and a snare or tenor drum may be over the top; and I would just have the piper.

You must not have much experience with high-tension heads. If you taped a sock to kevlar... the kevlar would laugh at you.

Damping down the drums will kill the tone anyway, any pipemajor will tell you that you blow for tone not for volume, same with drums, i cant see the point of killing a drum for the sake of reducing the volume when smallpipes or a solo piper would sound fantastic in a church,
