I used to own a pair of the acrylic tartan hose from Higgins, and I wouldn't buy another pair. Even after following the "care and feeding" instructions, they still began to unravel and grow "beards" -- a friend of mine has had the exact same experience.
The Tartan Thistle in Washington State offers hand-knit wool tartan & diced hose for around $120, and they are worth every penny.
