Thrift Store SCORE
I'm sorry, I just have to brag.
I went thift storing yesterday, and I made out like a bandit. I've never been so lucky... and every item I purchased will/could be worn with a kilt.
I bought three jackets.
Jacket #1 is a nylon USAF style (or perhaps USAF issue... I am roughly 1/2 hour from an air force base) nylon bomber jacket in OD green. It's in great shape, and will look equally good with jeans or a kilt.
Jacket #2 is a raincoat/trenchcoat/great coat, in a dark olive, with a zip-out liner... Very heavy, very warm, and long enough to be kilt friendly.
Jacket #3 is a brown wool tweed sport coat that will be modified into a kilt jacket. I might outsource the mod, as I don't really trust myself with scissors... but it will be nice to have a jacket to wear when shirt sleeves aren't enough and my Argyll is too much.
But here's the best part...
All three jackets cost less than $25 US.
I'll see about getting some pics tonight.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Hey crusty I know how you feel, I love to go thrift storing. Last week I picked up a dark brown tweed jacket that will be converted to a kilt jacket just as soon as I pay for the sporran that beserk bishop is making for me.

Brag away! That's awesome I really need to hit a thrift store and keep an eye out for some good finds. I'm not sure how lucky we'd get finding something in Christopher's size, and I haven't really done a lot of altering, but how fun would it be to get some jackets for Christopher to wear with his kilts? And affordably, at that! I'm sure there's all sorts of stuff you could find at thrift stores that you could use for casual and dressier looks.

Congrats on your great find. Lots of my favorite sweaters have come from thrift stores (either as is, or unraveled and reknit).

Sorry guys, no pics yet. I hope to remedy that this weekend.
I do, however, have an update on just how AMAZING my finds are.
-The bobmber jacket is polyurethane-backed nylon, making it water- and wind-proof, and it is down/feather filled.
- The overcoat is military issue, not sure what country (tags are in english), and it is 100% wool! Both the shell and the removable liner are wool. It's in excellent condition. I can't find a spot of wear on it.
-The tweed jacket is nothing special, but it is wool, and it will make a good conversion.
And I only spent $24.97... I don't even want to think about what the first two jackets would have cost if I'd paid retail...
