Strange Question

I used to have one. I pick up accents easily, and spent one summer with my sister in New York (Long Island). I went home with enough of an accent that people asked me the following school year if I was from NY. I ended up with no accent after a while and was amused when people would try to guess where I was from when I talked on the phone

Now, when I've had a few too many drinks sometimes, or especially if I'm really tired and groggy? The ol' Texas drawl starts coming back. Sometimes I get a bit of an accent when I chat with my sister a little too long, too (she's not from NY, but she married someone from there and has an accent). My Mom has quite a southern accent (so does my Dad). They're all from southern Illinois and I was the first one born in Texas.

I quite like French accents, too!

i know what you mean. living in Gastonia I picked up a slight ebonics sort of thing. sometimes it just slips and i would say "I be".

Since i like to do voices, i'm gonna learn to do a scottish accent. so far on my list: southern, Indian, wisconsin, spanish, sylvester stallone. it shouldnt be hard to learn- for anyone...is it?

Cynthia, I know what you mean. I spent 5 years of college in Southern Illinois, And that accent I picked up took another five years to get rid of.:beer:

Hey, I'm from Southern Illinois (St Louis area, although my folks now live just south of Carbondale). It's not us that have the strange accent, it's you people from Chicago.

When I went to college, everyone said I had an accent, but of course I didn't hear it. When my mom visited though, I could really hear it in her voice.

Cynthia, we guys like the accents too. Whether it's southern or Russian or anything else, I love to hear it on a pretty lady. I don't "swoon" though, but other reactions do occur.

I actually don't have much of an accent. I was raised in Ga I then joined the Navy and went from Illinois for bootcamp, Memphis for A school, and then spent the remainder of my 4 years stationed out of Oak Harbor, Wa. Of course I traveled around on one cruise and multiple deployments.

I think spending time in such different parts of the country, as well as being around people from all parts of the US had made my accent almost no existent.

I definitely find all accents fascinating to hear, but I especially adore Scottish, Irish, English (you get the idea), and French accents Just a warning in advance to anyone with those (especially if you're kilted)... just ignore the gal turning bright red and getting giddy. I've made a fool of myself on more than one occasion when someone with one of those accents said even a few words to me. Heheh!

Ah, that's a funny story, that wasn't just strange it was unexpected!

I tend to pick up on accents pretty quick, which kind of enables me to do voices... ah, the fun. I can speak like Marvin Martian!

I've been known to reply with a nice thick ersatz brogue and tell them that I'm from California. It usually gets a grin!

I can honestly say I've never had that one.
When I am in the states I fairly often get girls tell me they like Scottish accents until I have spoken to them long enough that they have to admit they barely understand a word I am saying. At which point I usually switch to my 'I work in a call centre' accent.

What do you think the girls would have done if you had an accent?

That's the first time I've heard of anyone receiving that question simply because they wore a kilt. The kilt does invoke a lot of misconceptions.

I'm also a born & bred Aussie, and when I stopped for lunch in a tiny village in Tipperary, the owner of the pub asked me what part of America I was from!
