What did work was running it on air dry with a couple of sheets of antistatic/softener stuff. In this case I used the unscented variety (that's what my wife buys anyway). After about 30 minutes the awful odor was gone.
I've used this trick to get rid of odours in wool garments, works quite well. Just make sure you don't use high heat.
