    Kilt Pin Design

First off, I am amazed and inspired by the creativity of the people on this board. All of the wonderful projects got my own creative juices flowing. For my first project I thought I would make my own kilt pin. I was intrigued with the pewter casting that has been displayed in previous threads so I thought that this was a good chance to learn something new.

I really like celtic knot work and I came up with the following designs

After finishing the templates I carved the designs out of a polymer clay.

They still need some file and sanding work but I had to share my progress. The wife already wants me to make the first pin into a pendant

I still need to create the RTV molds, cast the pieces, clean up castings, apply and oxidizing agent and do a finial polish. (At least that what I believe that I still have to do).

Wow, what a great start! What is polymer clay? Do you fire it to cure it or does it cure or dry?

Low temperature baking in the home oven, Wally. Usually about 300F (?) if I remember right.

What metal are you gonna cast them from ?

This is a great project, please do keep us updated. I may try something like this myself. Actually, I've been getting heavily into hand work things such as this and I think it would be cool to see a step-by-step how to for something like this.

Oh neat!!! Great idea. This is (or seems to be) doable with common household stuff, and maybe a blow torch?
