			Strange Welsh connection

I dont know if this is the right sub-forum, but here goes: I have been watching the news out of Chile lately and there seems to be a Welsh-speaking town just across the border that is being affected by the volcano. A welsh speaking town in Argentina?!?!?! Anyway, they are looking to move these welsh/argentinians back to wales. OK, not really kilt related, but how about celt-related? Anyway, i just thought this was rather an interesting story. You never know where celtic people will pop up around the world. I wonder if they have a tartan?

Here's a recent article about this:

From the link, I didn't see that the village is Welsh, though the fact that there is a Welsh school/center there might indicate that. It wouldn't be unusual, though, since the majority of Argentines are of European ancestry. There is even a sizable English population there, as well as Italian and German.
Ok, I didn't see the second link till now.

It's really not that strange; as Galician mentioned, there are a number of European communities in not only Argentina, but in all of South America as well.
When my wife lived in Venezuela, she visited a town in the Andes, Colonial Tovar, which was settled by German immigrants in the 19th century. The town's buildings looked straight out of the Black Forest, signs were in German and Spanish, German food, etc.

You'll find pipe bands in Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil for example, as well as St. Andrew's & Caledonian Societies.

Take a look at this web site:

I think that where ever there was mining to be done, the Welsh and the Cornish figgered immigrating there was a good bet. Southwestern Wisconsin has descendants of Welsh and Cornish emigres.

 They hold Eisteddfods etc too!

BBC Wales recently showed a programme with a Welsh actor visiting and taking a horse trail journey there. Alas I forget his name.
