Instead of getting into a pointless argument about whether a kilt is a skirt or not - and the really thick ones are never going to be convinced it is a man's garment anyway - why not: "The kilt is a skirt like a Ferrari F1 is a car"

Perhaps, but I like it !

You know, most of the time when people say "nice skirt", it's more of a compliment; they just forgot the proper word "kilt".
So I simply answer "Thank you." with a smile, and each goes his way.
