Good call man, way to stick to your guns.

I had the same thing happen, but with my girlfriend, not too long ago when I received my first kilt (a sportkilt Irish).
I was so excited when it came that I wanted to wear it everywhere, so I put everything on, and a nice polo, and picked her up for dinner. Well she loved the kilt, but hated the idea I would wear it in public to dinner without it being a special event. So I went home and changed. But the other night I got all kilted up for a dinner party with her and some friends, and I refused to let her tell me not to wear it. She respected me for it, and even thought it was hot I was so dedicated to my kilt.

A very interesting story, James. I'll be wanting to know how that meeting turns out. What in the world did hubby say to make her change her mind? On second thought, it's none of my business - but, if she happens to tell you...

I've had a number of similar occasions where brides hired me to pipe at their ceremonies, while the moms were dead set against it.

Brides usually win, but the moms.... suffice it to say, they make it quite clear I'm unwelcome. I just gut it out and revel in the fact that I charged extra because they wanted to be difficult.

Hope you efforts pay off, though I am reminded of Twain's quote regarding never trying to teach a pig to dance.

    Slainte yall,
    steve

Educate gently, mate. Gently. No reason to drop a bomb on her. Few nice pictures, great,,, a few links to places where the man can purchase a kilt...no problem.

I suggest smiling a lot and somehow temporarily forgetting that idea that she actually called you up out of the blue and told you that you could not wear a kilt.

Our lunch date is on Monday next (26th) and I'm going to soft sell it. Go with info and history first, then I'll let her ask the questions, and I'll guide her through the education process. But as soon as she gives me an opening..... I'll pounce.... Family history - I'm there. Tartan history - Got it. Fashion and manner of dress - covered. World-wide Scottish outflow - ready. Hagis - I'll have a recipe. Highland Games - I'll talk about flipping the caber. I'm bringing a couple books on tartan, one on history, and one just on the kilt. While I am not the tartan expert that Matt is, I can hold my own when talking to almost anybody.......

Actually, I hadn't thought of doing a PowerPoint, but now I may. I'll at least have a slide show ready of many representative examples.

Oh, and sources too, I'll have web-sites, address and phone numbers - her husband did mention that he was interested in getting a kilt!...... I sure don't want to alienate her, because her husband would make a great vice-chairman of our Tartan Ball!

And as far as I am concerned, her first phone call never happened.

I tend to think that she didn't know of her husband’s feelings, and he must have read the riot act to her. But I don't know, and I don't need to know what happened between them. She seemed genuine on the phone, but if she's a phony, I think my BS filter will start clanging.

From the Halls of Montezuma to luncheon somewhere nice. You Marines certainly don't shy away from full frontal attacks.

    Good luck with the conversion.
