I would suggest that he is probably an old soldier, and that he is probably wearing his old military glengarry and kilt.

Aye, but I have seen a number of photos from the 19th century of civilians wearing glengarries.

I have one other photo of the old boy wearing the same Glengarry, but this time in ... gasp ... pants.
