    Stewart by any other name?

Hello all! this is my very first post and I'm in need of some help

I'm getting ready to enter the process of ordering my very first kilt (a SWK standard) but I'v run into an odd problem. I would very much like to have some connection to the tartan I choose but have very little information available. I know that my Mum is a Stewart and her grand father was a Scottish national until he moved to Perry Sound Ontario. Now not a single person in any area of my family is interested in genealogy, compounded by the fact that when I showed the Royal Stewart to my Mum she was adamant that this was not "our" tartan. So now I am plying the brains of XMTS in hopes of clarification.

Btw I'v been hanging around for a while and if Belsen ever sees this. I need to know where he got that Oi Polloi sporran

Anyway thanks in advance and I hope to be kilted among everyone very soon!

    Hello and from Boston, Massachusetts.
Belsen hasn't been on here much lately, he is active on MySpace. His sporran is a fairly basic model he punked up with the Oi Polloi insignia.

Now to the great tartan question.... I do not know enough from your post as to what family genealogy that you do have. I am curious.. As far as the Stewart tartans go, there are many versions of the tartan to choose from if you wish to display one of the Stewart tartans.
If you get the opportunity, check out some of the tartan finders that are around, I believe Scotweb (the advertiser in the top right of the screen) has one that works fairly well for most Scot surnames. You may also wish to post on this thread some of the family surnames, and let us give them a go. My spouse is a genealogist, and we have a vast library and other resources at our fingertips, as do others that read this board.

BTW you are not the youngest on the board, we have many young students here all the way up to ancient retirees. I am closer to the latter.

There are quite a few Stewart/Stuart tartans. Do you know what part of Scotland your great grandfather came from?

If you'd like to see the various possible tartans for your name, there are two sites I would recommend:

    House of Tartan: Tartan Finder

    Scottish Tartans Authority: Tartan Ferret

Look for "Stewart", and see if your mum recognizes any of those. Due to the association of the Royal Stewart tartan with the royal family, the "Old Stewart" or "Ancient Stewart" tartan (ITI #319) is often regarded as the tartan for the clan as a whole.

This suggestion may be a" blind alley",but in this part of Scotland the name Stewart would mean Stewart of Appin not the the House of Stuart. They have very different tartans.Just a thought.

    Matt,

Is the old Stewart #319? The reason I ask is that the STA says this tartan dates to 1819.

And is the Stewart Hunting #1916? The reason I ask is that STA suggests that an alternate name for the Old Stewart #319 is "Stewart of Appin" and then they list a Stewart of Appin htg--#430.
