My personal rule of thumb is that I do not wear a tie unless someone is getting married or buried. And actually the last 2 funerals I attended were without a tie, and the last wedding I attended I wore a sweater, no shirt and tie. But, if there were an event where it would make someone I care about uncomfortable by me not wearing a tie, or what ever else was considered appropriate, I would gladly choose to conform to expectations.
