Your posit of an unfavorable outcome sounds like an argument for nonviolent pacifism, perhaps in keeping with your choice to wear a comb or bottle opener that has the handle of a sgian dubh. That the story teller chooses to wear a (customary) weapon with his kilt suggests that you two might not share the same philosophy.

The higher the payoff, the more likely someone is to risk bravado. Or perhaps it wasn't bravado at all . . . something the story-teller knows and shouldn't tell.
