And if your waist measurement is right at the line between sizes, I'd recommend going with the smaller size. I went with the larger size on my first one, and while it was wearable, it was slightly too large.
I ended up giving it to my brother who is also slightly too large so things worked out well.
I might have to disagree. My sizing was on the line between two sizes (even listed for both). I went for the smaller size. I had ordered the works, however, and while I could probably have worn the kilt, the buckles didn't reach.

I wound up selling it unworn and getting the next size up.

P.S. Cephas, mine was in the Clergy tartan, like what you appear to wearing in your pic.

Interesting. The one I had that was larger was the original style. Maybe that made a difference. I also have a works I got a few months ago and it's pretty close but seems to be just a hair big. I have another original that I bought in the smaller size when I gave the first one away and it's about right.

Beowulf, I wonder if this shows a problem in their sizing for buckles.

Don't choose a kilt soley on the tartan. Consider the quality, especially if you plan on wearing it to more dignified events. Smith probably belongs to a clan or sept. Be weary of surname tartans.

Hmmm, could be. Plus there is probably some variation from one kilt to the next in manufacturing them, so maybe I've just gotten the ones on the larger end of the spectrum and you got the ones on the other end.

Maybe Cephas belongs to the Smith clan or sept as well.

And that's a good point about the quality. As long as you know what you're getting and realize a SK or many others that are popular are not 100% hand sewn in Scotland wool kilts, you should be happy.

    Always good advice.

I know a sportkilt is not something to wear to formal events but I want something lightweight for wandering around town on Highland games week (and maybe participating in some of the events). And quite frankly I want a Smith tartan kilt and don't have the $500+ it will cost to have a wool one made...

Yes, my kilt in the pic is a clergy tartan. I needed a kilt for some of my "clergy" duties on Highland Games week and it seemed the most appropriate to get.

Its not a sportkilt though which is why I am asking the question about sizes.

Wow, are the Games that rough up there that they need someone to administer Last Rites???

Sport Kilts are great for highland games, IMHO especially if you are competing. They are lightweight and cool enough, and inexpensive enough that you don't have to worry about messing them up as much as you would a more expensive one.

And that Smith tartan does look pretty sharp on their web site! Enjoy.
