Sett width question

I've recently received some P/V tartan fabric from Marton Mills. It is the Fraser Red Modern tartan and I've ordered a fair amount of it. There's just one issue that has me worried, the sett size seems to be scaled down. Is there a standard width for the sett of this tartan? I want to make a kilt with this (couldn't afford wool right now) and I'm worried that it won't look right. Was I supposed to ask for a certain type of P/V tartan? Any info would be great.

As I understand it, the sett size is dependent on the size and weight of the threads making up the fabric. For example, 16oz wool has a larger sett than 13 oz wool. As I recall, the PV is 10.5-11 oz weight and has a smaller sett.

That is correct. The lighter the thread the smaller the sett, conversely the heaver the thread the larger, or wider and taller the sett.

Generally speaking this is true, although it doesn't scale arithmetically.

If you're worried about have pleats that are too shallow, just double the sett (i.e., put two repeat into each pleat rather than just one), and you'll have pleats that are a more normal depth. If the sett is 3-4", this works fine. If it's 5-6", you're probably better off using only one repeat per pleat.

I guess what worries me is the overall look of the smaller sett (3"). I wanted it to look as traditional as possible. Does sett size matter in this regard? Thanks for your help.

It will look ok. You are making an inexpensive kilt, go for it. I've made a few light weight kilts and they will look fine.
