Kilt shops in Edinburgh - suggestions?

I'd have to agree with Phil. Stuart Christie on Queen's Street is a very good tailor. I bought an Inverness from them over ten years ago and it still looks new and is the warmest coat I've ever had. Never a problem and always looks good.

Bruce, By all means if you really want a kilt "Made in Scotland" for sentimental reasons, then get one.

However there are many very fine kiltmakers here in N. America. A quick search of this forum will give you some names and reviews.

Give Bob McDonald in Vancouver a call.

Kathy Lare in Arizona is highly respected.

Our own Barb Tewksbury is the lady who wrote the book, and creates perhaps the best of the Kiltmakers Art in the world.


Nothing of course will replace the bragging rights that go with a kilt that you can say was custom made for you in Scotland, but I'm just trying to point out that their are options.
You have already heard from Nick at The Scotweb. They are an advertiser here and their reputation is second to none. I would highly recommend you drop them a line and pay them a visit when you get over there.

Just doing some visiting in London - but will be heading up to Scotland in a few days. The collective wisdom on this board is amazing! I am now a much more informed consumer thanks to you all. Will let you know how it goes.

You can't go far wrong with Hector Russell on Prince's Street. The best thing I find about them is that, umless you insist, they'll not sell you just anything for a sale, i.e. they're very good at saying if something just 'doesn't go'!

Thanks for all the comments - it is a great help for a kilt newbie. It was no trouble spoting the Gold Bro. shops. In a few of their shops they had the kilts on backwards on the display models (wish I had my camera).

I did come across a gently used xrental at St Kilts. It is 16 oz wool, 8 yards Douglas for 130 GBP. Any thoughts on xrentals at this price? Thanks for the help.
