Last night I stopped in my local ABC store where lo and behold I see they now carry Highland Park Scotch!!
They recently started stocking Laphroaig and now this.

Ah, there was joy in Mudville last night....

I think that you're seeing a trend. Retailers may have finally gotten the idea that there are a significant number of people out there who would rather have a modest amount of the "good stuff" rather than an awful lot of the rot-gut and are finally accommodating them.

But then again, how long has it been since any of us have had any true rot-gut?*

Upon sampling Highland Park one learns what fine whisky tastes like - instead of that cough medicine Laphroaig.

But WOW! - is it ever expensive.

The Highland Park 12 year is about $33 at Beverages and More (about the same as The Balvenie Doublewood). Its a favorite here at la maison de Panache.

It's considerably more costly in Tennessee due to revenue taxes. The last 750 ml bottle I splurged for was close to sixty frogskins.

Tennessee is considerate enough not to inflict its citizenry with a state income tax, so they make up the difference elsewhere.

Steve, I have Highland Park at home as one of my favorites. I know what you mean about the mediciny taste of other whiskys. I recommend a Speyside as another alternative to HP. If you ever get a chance to sample a Macallan 12, give it a try. It's MUCH cheaper than the 18, but it's 99% of the flavor.

I have a bottle of it in a sampler set that I've stashed away for a special occasion. Tonight may be a good enough reason to pull a cork.

Guess we are spoiled out here. No shortage of Single Malts to select from often at reasonable prices. (I like Highland Park and Laphroaig).

I was given a bottle of the Macallan 12 year by my beloved Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess for Father's Day. We both are really enjoying it. Complex would sum it up. As you taste it there are several different qualities that manifest themselves. If I was Pour1Malt I would have a better way of describing it. Definately one to take time with and savor.

I had thought we were usually higher than TN down here but recent events have proven me wrong, but that's why I buy at the state store. The HP was $39 I think, and the Laphroaig is ~$45 or so, if I recall correctly.

But I went shopping in Turpin's neck of the woods and at the regular retail store it was around $5 to $8 a bottle cheaper for everything than it is at my state store. Regular liqour stores around here are outrageous.
