The Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess and I wanted to get my Father a whole kilted outfit for Christmas. My Mother opposed the idea saying he was too short and wide to look good in one.

We took her thoughts into consideration, and after .3 seconds, rejected them and went forward with our plan.

I think my Dad looks great in his ensemble (OK to be honest he is a little rumpled in this picture but he will get the hang of wearing it )

Kilts are one of the few garments I know of that can look great on a very wide variety of builds. All the way from Willowy (Me) to Robust (Ron).

    Cheers

This sounds like a poorly-thought-out excuse that he contrived when put on the spot. What's he really saying? It's not that he's skinny, it's that he's worried about what other people will think. I believe *most* people - to one degree or another - worry about what people think about their looks. It's part of our nature and part of identifying threats (anything different is bad) to try and fit in.

A lot of people get a thrill while overcoming their fears. I certainly did when I learned to skydive. I will also admit to enjoying the feeling of wearing something different while *not* feeling the discomfort that I know a lot of other people would feel if they donned a kilt. This is certainly not the main reason I wear a kilt, but I think it's part of the experience. Does your friend want that?

Compliments on legs when kilted vs. wearing shorts

I've gotten the same sort of thing - compliments on my legs when kilted, but not when wearing shorts. I also don't believe my legs to be all that "great" or "nice" (they just look like regular legs to me!).

I'm figurin' that because people are actually noticing the kilt, and don't really notice shorts, they're also seeing our legs when they would normally not pay attention to them. And I guess that despite what we think of our own legs, other people must seem to think they look good! (go figure, eh?)

I have been working on my legs more since donning the kilt... funny thing what compliments'll do for the self-image!

I'm a skinny kinda guy and I don't have a problem so long as I wear thick, handmade hose! My calf muscles, such as they exist, need the extra bulkiness.

Mind, apparently you can get 'chicken fillets' for your calves in the same way that women can get them for their bras!

Yes, I've gotten the comment "I didn't know you had great legs" when I first wore my kilt. "Have I seen you wear shorts before?" was the follow-up question.

    Interesting thread.

While there are a wide variety of body shapes, the kilt seems to enhance them all, when worn in a manner that is not sloppy.

From casual to ultra-formal, a kilt sets one apart from the crowd. I'm not a suitwearer if I can help it, but I enjoy a sharply pressed kilt, tie, and jacket.

Like many others have expressed, I'm a Late Middle Aged, balding male, not likely to be called handsome by anyone (except my wife ), yet I get my share of comments from the ladies while kilted.

For those holding back because you are concerned what others may say, just stand tall and proud and enjoy the experience.

I am willing to believe that there are some men who don't look good in a kilt. After all, it is simply an article of clothing, not some magical garment.

However, those same guys who don't look good in a kilt probably look even worse in trousers.

A kilt is certainly more flattering for the fuller figure (like mine) than p@nts but still looks good on a slimmer figure.
