Right. You don't want to tie them too high - you don't want the Conan the Barbarian look. It's also important to tie them tightly, or they will slip down. But they can't go anywhere if they're just up on your ankle, instead of all the way up your calf.
And I've found the bulkier hose hold the laces in place better, but that's a minor thing.
I won't weigh in on the tie in the front versus tie on the side thing. That's the great ghillie question of our age. It's like "boxers or briefs." Your preference.
