Hello and a warm Celtic from Boston, Massachusetts.
My suggestion is that both you and your son get together in front of the computer monitor, and check out all the vendors on this board. They are here because they offer good customer service and are fair in their prices vs quality department. I do not know at what stage your son is in the growth cycle. If he is still growing, you may want to start with a USA Kilts casual, SWK thrifty, or Sport Kilt, if Tartan is involved. If a contemporary kilt is on his wish list, the D.I.Y. forum has directions for an X-Kilt, that he could sew for himself, if so inclined. I made one out of heavy denim that Jo-Ann's Fabrics had on remainder for $ 2.00/yard. Two days later, I was wearing my new homemade kilt.
For an example, my avatar is a Stillwater Kilts Standard in the Irish National Tartan.... The picture was taken when I got home from church one Sunday.

Welcome from Houston, TX!!
I recommend going with a Stillwater Thrifty or Economy kilt for the first kilt since it's his first one. This way if he decides he doesn't like wearing it, you're only out $30-40 and not $100+. But, that's just me.

Cead mille failte!
I'd head straight to Stillwater and their standard kilts. It's a quality garment, certainly not up to the level of a hand-sewn wool masterpiece, but it'll serve to get someone started wearing the kilt.
