Couple More Antarctica Tartan Pics

Wore my Antarctica tartan kilt from Kathy Lare today and grabbed a couple more pics. Think a few are still lusting after this lovely tartan.

Really liked the way Barb T pleated the one she made up and asked Kathy to do it the same way. What is so cool is how the white underpleat flashes in the wind.





Material is woven by D.C. Dalgliesh. Think its 13 ounce. Your kiltmaker can order the material through the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust.

Background is the Echo Cliffs on the Navajo Reservation.

I went to her website and am wondering, how many tartans does she carry? I have always loved the Antarctic tartan, and so does my wife. Simply wonderful. My favorite tartan yet.

Kathy doesn't stock material - at least not on purpose. She orders it in as needed. What she is good at is finding the tartans folks want/need - not just one option, sometimes many. She has great relationships with all the mills.

So, when I see a tartan I want I just tell her and she finds it then I send her a deposit to cover the purchase of the cloth. She sews it up and lets me know when she's done and I send her the balance.

Pretty cool deal.

Of course if I have the material already - like with the X Marks tartan - just send it to her and she sews it up.

Or if I know what I want - like the House of Edgar Old and Rare Cameron Black and Red - I just tell her that's what I want, send the down payment, and she orders in what's needed for my size.

The price of worsted wool makes keeping tartan in stock of no benefit to the kiltmaker. You'll find some on occasion, like Kathy or Barb or Matt (I've seen instances of all three) where they have an excess of cloth from a previous order, or a length someone backed out on or maybe even a length they found on Ebay or "sale" somewhere they picked up. In those cases you'll often find a kilt in with that cloth, from them, at a discounted price. But, keeping worsted wool in stock, other than a large "kilt company", is pretty much unheard of.

Right, my observation and experience as well. There are very few places I suspect orders in bulk States side. The major suspect in my observation would be J. Higgins. His company appears to stock Strathmore Woolen Mills material. His Kilt prices are excellent for the tartans his company claims to stock. In other places on his website, the company claims to be able to acquire an array of tartans and that there are more than one kilt maker with the company.

Very nice Ron. The white does look stunning popping out from behind the grays and blues. I think I may have to look into one for my next purchase.

Maybe it sounds a little odd to say that the Antarctica tartan looks perfectly at home in the Echo Cliffs, but dang it, the Antarctica tartan looks perfectly at home in the Echo Cliffs!

Hey thanks Bradley,

I shoulda said that to begin with.

My ego thought that I'd get many questions about the Antarctica tartan at the games, but I didn't get a one.

I did have a comment.

Was at a vendor tent and a guy there was wearing a hand sewn Leatherneck tartan that was very well done.

So I said, "Semper Fi, I have a kilt just like that."

He replied, "Why aren't you wearing it?"

I told him, "I'm wearing my Antarctica tartan kilt today."

He looked up at the dark thunderheads building in the sky, then down at my kilt and said, "Are you trying to make it snow?"
