I've been on that trip 3 times, and as I remember I used stuff with 100% deet. nasty stuff. little tiny bottle that has lasted me 5 years. but the biting flies were big enough to carry off a small child.
I've camped in a kilt before, like a month ago I spend a week at boy scout summer camp. I had no problem with insects. well I also was the only one who didn't deinfest my tent from the spider colony that was living there.
spiders do help with the insects. maybe you should get a pet spider just hide it up your kilt
have fun!
