    Kilt "Safety" Pin

Here's a link to a nickel plated, 4 inch, horse blanket pin... For far less than $1.00: http://www.sstack.com/shopping/produ...ProductID=1146

    DWF,

Would you settle for a rampant lion? See here:

Even with my small pins, I carefully work the sharp end *between* the fibers of the weave, rather than pierce individual strands and risk cutting or breaking them with the point of the pin. I also polish the end of the pin to a very small-diameter round shape to help diminish the likelihood that a sharp point will pierce an individual thread and cut it. If you do these things, I expect a little steam will return your wool to its original shape after the pin is removed.

Here are a couple of threads on favorite and alternative kilt pins, just for ideas. There are many that are not swords.

I also like to have a different design for each pin. Although it's not an absolute policy with me, I also like to tie the design of the pin into the tartan somehow, whether theme, stone color, whatever.

When I had my Dove tartan designed, I also went looking for a unique pin to wear on it. I finally had this pin done, by O'Neille here on the forum. It's a celtic dove design I found on the internet.

I don't seem to be able to get Rex's links to work...

"Fru Fru" is probably in the eye of the kilt wearer, but I like to have pins with symbolic meaning like the zebra pin Moosedog sent me, or my grandmother's skeleton key, even my highschool maskot. Guess you could even put things on the giant safety pin...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Oi! Kilt pins have a purpose??

I always thought they were just an excuse to treasure hunt the internet and satisfy my need for great bargains and interesting finds!

That's how I found this one for something like $10 (plus shipping from Australia)...

I do use a small piece of rubberband through the pin after I attach it to make sure it doesn't fall out if the clasp comes undone. I dare say I won't be able to replace it should it turn up missing...

Here it is in action - just about the right size, I think...
