Patent leather. Maybe wing tip style? What do you think?

Any decent set of wingtip brogues will do; properly bulled up, of course.

For the formal times, I bring out my ghillie brogues, although my wingtips would do nicely, I'm sure.

For dancing I bought a pair of gillie style dance shoes (we won't go into the details but the maker didn't believe the size of my feet!) They are not suitable for everyday wear (soles too thin, for starters) For dressier occasions I wear a pair of wing-tips, not because I wouldn't like a pair of gillie brogues, but I have yet to find a pair with a wide enough toe box for my Celtic feet (great toe is slightly shorter than #2, #3 and the same length of #4!) I notice that Scotweb advertises a wide shoe, will have to check them out by sending a tracing of my feet. (My wing-tips are a 13EE- just a bit too large, but a 12EE pinches; no 12 1/2 available,) I would like a pair of the strapped gillies for super formal, but a bit out of my price range, at the moment.

I usually wear these type of shoes for more formal occasions:

Also, for slightly less formal occasions, a nicely shined pair of Dr. Martens works rather well.
Who looks at guys' shoes anyway?

I wear my "shoes, black, highland pattern" for most dressing-up occasions. If it involves dancing, and is a dressy occasion, I take some Scottish country dancing pumps otherwise I wear gym shoes/trainers.

I agree with the rabble who advocate regular wingtip brogues. They are fancy enough for formal events. Here is a picture of the installation ceremony of the Finlaggen Pursuivant, and you will see that the worthy gents in attendance are wearing wingtip brogues, not ghillies. This is a daytime event, and the dress is semi-formal, but wingtips will do for formal as well.
You should wear what pleases your eye, and is consistent with the degree of formality for a given event. A pair of diced hose [available at a reasonable price from J Higgins] are a good choice for formal events, as well.

I really love the look of wing tip brogues. Now they can be worn with a dressy outfit, but I believe they started out as "field shoes" worn more with clothing associated with stalking through the heather and peat than the prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat.

I still think the ghillie brogue is the sharpest look you can get in a kilt, short of boot spats (of course).
