that much money? for a print of a copy of another artists painting? At least get a print of the original painting.

Those are sort of originals. The original painting, probably an oil, must still reside with the family or in a museum. There may have been another painting done as a maquette for the engraver to make the plates for the prints but that painting would nine times out of ten be a watercolor and God only knows where that might have ended up...possibly it was just tossed after the prints were struck since the prints were the true objective and the painting was just a guide. The prices are certainly not out of line for work of that quality, subject material and vintage. Just goes to show that you should always check the attic and look hard at prints at yard sales.
