Exactly what I was thinking, JS Sanders. The other thought was a casting of the snake almost as a relief sculpture back and forth on a cantal plate of some sorte. That could probably be done in silver or puter.. Just pondering things...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

    Ted,
A model could be created, relatively simply, from sculpted polymer clay. Once it's baked, it's durable enough to be molded & cast.

I have no idea of the dimensions for a cantle, but this could be a collaborative project with someone.

It might be a very good way to upgrade a simple sporran, as well. The polyclay is what I mean. The snake part could be used, but I guess it could be any number of designs on a cantle.

    Another Snake Head Sgian

OK...JS sent me a wonderful cast of his deceased Rat snake, and I just put the finishing touches on my new sgian. (photos go clickety pop)

    And in action....

"Is that a snake in your sock, or is it just a JS sgian?" (Mae West)

In the small world category...it turns out that JS and I both earned graduate degrees with snake biology as our thesis subject. In fact, we both presented papers at the same professional meeting in Memphis, TN as students. We probably bumped into each other several times over the course of the week. That was back in 1981, and now we connect once again. How cool is that?

Looks positively stunning. You didn't waste any time getting the Pantherophis connected to a blade. Have you worn it publicly?

I was thinking out loud earlier today.... wouldn't a large sized Agkistrodon piscivorus look absolutely breathtaking cast as a handle for a dirk?

For that matter, almost any Trimeresurus sp. would be breathtaking.

In grad school, there was a classmate whom I watched dive headfirst into a pond after a monstrous Nerodia fasciata. He was crazier than Steve Irwin. He caught her too.

I just stumbled upon this thread and had to resurrect it lol. These are very nicely done! I have worked for years to get over my fear of snakes and even keep a cornsnake in the house now as therapy. So I may have to consider one of these as a special accomplishment medal.

LOL ... when that said cornsnake passes, I'll even send it on ice for you to make a mold from so Rune and I can have one made from our very own snake. I think that would be kewl.

The snake is about 4 years old now - so, it might still be a few years though.
