Stone Mtn Games - GA - Camping question

Haven't been to the Stone Mtn Games before, but have heard great things. And, I know there are a lot of X Markers who have gone in the past. Where do folks camp? I've checked out the park map, and didn't realize how BIG the park is. There are lots of different camping areas, and I wondered if there was a specific / good spot that the Xmarkers liked to meet up / camp. We'll be "primitive" tent camping... So, shout out!
Also -- (re. the size of the park). Where exactly are the Games held within the park? It looks like (if you were camping) you'd have to actually get back in your car and drive / park to get to the main area. Is this the case? Just looking for some insider knowledge...

Also -- what's the rule on alcohol at the Games and the campground. I mean, I'm gonna HAVE it, just wonder how much I need to HIDE it...

    Slainte mhath,

The games are held at points 'G' and 'N' with parking at the "Yellow Daisy" lot. all along Old Hugh Howell Road and the Ride The Duck Lot.

Unfortunately you would have to drive to the games from the camp site **Edit: According to the map they have removed the camp sites we used to camp at. There used to be some over on the North side of the mountain about where point 'G' is located.

    Hope to see you there!

Steve has already given you a great answer. The park is huge and like everything else in Atlanta, you have to drive to it. I guess we should start an idea of a meet and greet place where the xmarkers can get together.

This might help as well, it is a map of the park.... camping is at spot 11 and the games are held at spot "E"

Thanks, guys. I noticed there's a "water taxi pier" at the campground. Is this a viable way to get over to the Games from the campground?

Any campground advice (better sections to choose, sections to stay away from (like, where there may be Campbells...)

I honestly don't know if the water taxi is even still running. I've never seen it on the lake as a matter of fact. Most likely it was just a way to ferry people across to walk to the laser show. I would not count on it without checking with the park first.

I've never camped at the family camp ground so I'm no help there. Several others here have though and from the stories I've heard, there is no quiet place once the bag pipes fire up and the parade starts around the camp You can sleep when you get home right

P.S. A little Cavscout Trivia also, I proposed to my wife about where the "Red 4 Square" is on the park map. There are remains of a stone fireplace and chimney in the woods there where the trail passes over an old homestead. The rest is history

I think about going every year and camping but never have. It sounds like fun.

Very nice, CavScout! I'll swing by, and tak off a dram to our collective loss of freedom!

Where's "the other" place to camp? Is it gone now?

On the bottom left of this map is the Youth Area Camp (This map is upside down compared to all their other maps, go figure). That's the one we always went to with scouts and church group. I don't know if it will be open for that weekend or not. If so I think it would be the better location because there is a huge playground just down the road and it wont be as crowded. There are a lot of places on that side of the mountain to "get away" and have some privacy.
