gold buttons and silver accessories?
Hey there,
I'm fixing up a formal kilt jacket for a laddie I know, and we really want to do gold buttons instead of the ubiquitous silver. But it's SO hard to find a gold-tone kilt buckle that doesn't cost as much as a new kilt or sporran!
So... would we be struck by lightning if the jacket had gold buttons and the accessories were silver tone, OR, do y'all know any good source for gold tone buckles?
Thanks ahead of time to all you lovely fellas.

Mixing finishes is not what I prefer (though I've had to in the process of putting together my outfits). Here's a buckle and belt

It will be difficult to find them since most folks don't ever consider the brass or gold options. Most kilt items are black and chrome. I sell quite a bit of brown and brass since I'm one of the only ones giving that option.

Celtic Croft also has a couple of brass belt buckles. See here: http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/Highlan...les_brass.html

what about sporrans (semi dress preferably) with either NO metal accents, or gold tone? Any good sources?

Most semi-dress sporrans have some metal accents. How about something like this: http://www.jhiggins.net/sf_proddetai...9040J60R843GUP
The metal studs could be covered with gold or black paint.

I have a (non-formal) brown sporran with a pewter (gray-silver) accent on it. I wear it with a brown kilt belt with a brass/bronze buckle. It BUGS me.....it shouldn't bug me so much, but it does. One of these days I'm going to get under the leather flap that holds it on, cut it off, get it bronze plated (costs a few bucks, not much) and sew it back on.

I got a nice rabbit-fur dress sporran with gilt cantle from "GEOFFREY-MADE FOR SCOTTISH" eBay store. They don't have one listed right now but you might write and ask if they are available. I have same plan for gold buttons on my man's jacket conversion, just haven't gotten there yet. Good luck and show us how it turns out!

I added the emphasis. Sounds to me as if maybe a 3-button vest would be in order, in which case a belt would not be worm. The sporran would still be a bit of a problem, but I have seen some posts here by the DYI'ers which are very dressy, but without any, or very little metal.
Do post some pics when you are done.

Sporrans
Don't know anything about them, but I came across this item from Wyvern Leatherworks the other day:
