Gee...it has often been said that you can wear any shirt that you would wear with a pair of trousers. I would think that that applies to a tie as well.

I wore this outfit to my daughter's wedding...note the tie colour. I don't claim any particular sartorial distinction but I don't think it looks bad. Now, if a coral coloured tie/cravat can look good with a Black Watch kilt, I reckon nearly any colour can.
