Dirkie,
Where the deuce was that?
I've only been asked once to remove mine & it was by a church minister. He didn't want a weapon in his sanctuary.
So I shoved it into my sporran - next to another weapon I doubt he would've approved either.

Like said, common sense should prevail as the deciding factor. If there is now common sense... find some.
For the state of Florida, a Sgian Dubh is within the legal blade length and can be worn if visible. Which a Sgian Dubh is worn in a visible fashion anyway. One should also remember, a Sgian Dubh has evolved into a piece of jewelry in most cases.
If you find yourself in a situation, and the sgian dubh becomes an issue, you're probably attracting the wrong kind of attention. Which also brings up another belief of mine, we should be trying to add validity to the wearing of a kilt.

Information:
There is a prescedent for this request -- the ancient right of sanctuary, or right of refuge. A violation of this right was punishable by excommunication, similar to Bruce's excommunication for the murder of The Red Comyn in Greyfriar's Kirk.
At the Kirkin' of the Tartans at my Episcopal parish, we request that gentlemen do not wear swords or dirks out of respect for this ancient custom, but we do allow sgian dubhs.
Very similar to the ancient right of hospitality in the Highlands, which once offered, could never be broken.
regards,
Todd

No argument. But I doubt he was invoking the ancient right of sanctuary.
I cannot even estimate the number of churches I've been in kilted.
This cleric was the only one who objected and I was kind to say he 'asked' me to remove it.
No big deal - and I declined offers to pipe there again.
