I think it is really down to the cut of the kilt. All of my kilts are shaped across the back, rather than hanging straight down. When I sit, for example at dinner, with my posterior well back in the chair, there is no problem.
I suspect problems may be a combination of a fleshy backside (and tummy) combined with a kilt which isn't as well tailored as it should be.
