    Question USCG Tartan

Does anyone know where I might be able to find fabric in the USCG tartan, and what types of fabric it might be available in?

I just noticed that the USCG has a pipe band, and they've a tartan to go with. My father-in-law retired from the USCG, and while I don't think I'll ever be able to talk him into a kilt, my wife would like to take a stab at making some napkins, or place mats, or possibly a tablecloth from the USCG tartan material for her father.

Also, is anyone familiar with how the 'standard' materials used in tartans would react to be used as a napkin or tablecloth? I have a tablecloth we made in the New Brunswick tartan. I picked up the material when we were on our honeymoon there, way back when. It's wool, and does well as a table cloth, over a white linen cover, but I'm not sure how the Poly/viscose, or a cotton/poly blend might hold up.

Thanks for any info and advice

Check out sportkilt. I'm not sure if Seamus sells fabric, but he does sell the kilts in this tartan. It is a handsome one, however.

You do not want any non-washable fabric for a table cloth. Wool is not good napkin material either. I would suggest treating the tablecloth with a water/stain repellent before using. Grease stains would also be a problem, but pre-treating before washing should work.

The PV would probably hold up better than P/Cotton. Cotton tartan, in my experience, tends to fade with too many washings.

The USCG tartan is a special weave item. See here: http://www.alexismalcolmkilts.com/1089/1098.html

Sportkilt is the only place that sells kilts in the USCG tartan. The material is cotton-poly.

According to the USCG Pipe Band website
    "http://www.uscgpipeband.org/"
Alexis Malcolm was commissioned to mfg their kilts. You might check with them to see if they have add'l tartan material.

Thanks for the replies, I've sent an e-mail to the Alexis Malcom site to inquire about obtaining the tartan material. I'll just have to wait now and see what they say
