Rustyhands,
First off, welcome to the site. You will find a lot of helpful information here.
Second, I could have gone with several different choices of tartans based on family surnames. However, I chose the one that was associated with my mother’s side because I had a closer relationship with her than my father. She raised me and he did not so it was obvious choice for me in the end. So pick the one whom you closely associate with.

Welcome to the rabble!
And I completely concur, if you are going to purchase a kilt or anything and want the tartan to based on familial ties, pick the family you are closest too. And if you are close to both, buy two kilts! It might be a little while, but it's a good excuse, reason, cause, justify it however you must

from the Old Dominion State!
I wear my surname Malcolm tartan as well as my mother's mother surname Robertson. My paternal grandfather's mother was a Morris and I proudly wear a Gordon tartan. My maternal Grandmother's mother was a MacRae and I would like to add that one, too one day.
And one day soon, Matt will send me my XMark's kilt and I'll be proudly be wearing the tartan of this clan forum.
And on it goes!

...On the other hand... you shouldn't (in my opinion) limit your tartan options to half your family, based on plumbing...
Ditto!
