While I have no "proof" of this, but human nature, being what it is, the silver buttons could also be just another way of saying "I got mine". Most likely there is some truth in all these reasons.

Anyone have ideas why the buttons are square rather than round, like most coins?

There is no need for them to be square. My buttons are round and show my crest:

Thanks for all the replies. Perhaps I am just looking at it wrong, and need to wait until such time as I can see one in person, although BEEDEE's looks nice. I like the smaller buttons on the sleeve. I think they've just looked to me, at least in pictures, that the buttons were pulling the eyes away from the rest of the outfit. They seemed overdone. But then again, I'm a very big proponent of understatement in dress.(odd that, with me enjoying the kilt eh?) I think that's why I like BEEDEE's picture. The buttons there are a little smaller, and not as "bright" as others I've seen. I think it also looks better on that snapshot of the white PC. I wonder if that's because there's not as much contrast between the buttons and the fabric when going from silver to white, as when going from silver to black.

Ah well, I've got plenty of time before I'll be able to purchase a kilt that needs a PC to go with it, so I can do more thinking, mulling and researching....

Thanks again for the education all,

    Casey
