Long time home Mac user here--since the Mac Plus. I went from a G4 tower to a 20 inch iMac 2.4 Ghz Intel model a couple of years back an it's been a GREAT machine. (The glossy screen is NOT a problem unless you have your computer in a super bright room--like the Apple store). I make my living on computers in the work world, and for home use I highly recommend the Intel iMacs. If you need portability, obviously the MacBook Pro is a better choice.

I picked up the Macbook Pro today, for $100 less than the 24" Imac ( $1599 vs $1699). They were out of stock on both the 24: Imac and the cinema display but I went ahead and picked up the Pro. I will pick up a display at a later date. My Pro has the matte finish, the glossy just doesn't cut it for work that gets transferred to paper. Now it's going to take me a good week to get everything transferred and my software loaded on it. Rob

Too bad your old Mac popped a cap - the new Macs do all the transfers for you... congrats on the new MBP - I sure love mine.

I plugged in a new imac 24" 2.8/320 last Friday. I wanted something I could work on while watching movies and general multitasking in my new office. I've got four Widows networked computers because of a need for windows XP to run legacy parallel port driven machinery and proprietary software. I only wish it were easier to network a mac with my windows based network printers. Bon Jour no work for moi. It's groovy to be able to work on the office website while working on an open office document and watching a movie all on the same screen. I had a hard time operating the mac laptops. The imac requires two hands to navigate and the mac laptops seem to require three thumbs.

The Rev A's were the ones that ended up with the bad capacitors, I must say that I was very fortunate, It's held up to some fairly heavy use, and to have them only now finally go after all these years, I definitely got my money's worth. If the Capacitors hadn't given up I would of just changed out the hard drive and kept on chugging along.

The Pro won't be used that much as a mobile computer, it's replacing my desktop and I will be adding a display later on for the needed real estate to handle the stuff I do there, for now the schools Mac Labs will have to do, for on the go work, I use my trusty 14" ibook, three and a half years and still stroking along. Kind of wish Apple hadn't discontinued the ibook, a very solid workhorse of a notebook.

Dee, i keep a back up wired keyboard for just that reason, though i have ot say I absolutely love the new Apple wireless keyboard, lasts a good 6 months on three batteries and I have never had any lag in typing.

Been using leopard since its release and i have an external 500G hard drive for all my stuff, I haven't been slowed down at all since I backup constantly. The only stuff on the desktops hard drive were applications, everything else is stored on the external.

You no doubt have heard that Macs can run windows now. My sons Macbook does it via VM ware fusion. He uses a special software for his Dislexia which only runs on windows XP ... It networks just fine and can use the wireless printer we have at home both from XP and the OSX operating system. My wife and daughter use PC's and they live happily together with our 3 Macs on a Mixed network.

It doesn't take long to network ... If I can do anyone can.

Its going to be time for my upgrade soon, and whilst I love playing with the MAC in the shop, I just cant bring myself to spend that much, and I have so much time and money invested in software etc for windows that I think I am stuck with it.

Not only can a Mac run Windows, it can do it better at times. Right now I'm running the Mac OS, and Windows 98, and two flavors of XP - at the same time on the same box. Cross-platform/cross-browser testing on one desktop. Parallels has saved me a LOT of time.
