The method my husband has used for 50 years is...
get a wooden men's suit hanger,the kind with the dowell that clips into the wire loop. Replace that short dowell with a loooong dowell, slide the hanging loops over the dowell and stretch the waist to hang naturally. He has never has a problem with the weight distoring the kilt, and until a few weeks ago, his were all tanks. He can also hang a jacket on the same hanger.

Great tip, but I'm so small I have to fold my kilt in 3rds instead of fourths. 
120lbs. at 5'10" will do that.
