Smart business attire?

Yes, waistcoats are very nice with a kilt. I have the feeling this is an American thing, but I like the idea of the kilt cut blazer or business suit without any of the cuff, epaulet, and pointy pocket things. Just a regular suit jacket and waiscoat or sport jacket fitted at the bottom and waist to go with the kilt.

I'd hardly call it "an American thing." Many Scots wear plain, unadorned jackets. My Chief is one of them:

This is one of me at the Loon Mountain games. This is a bit more casual than some of the other pics posted here, but I think it would work well in a business casual environment (minus the sunglasses).



Here's the same kilt worn with a black jacket. I know it has silver colored buttons but I still think it would work in a business environment...

Having dealt with the "suits" in business for many years, It is always better to be more conservative than less so, even in a "casual" environment. The Crail jacket, which is essentially a sport jacket cut to wear with a kilt, matching or complementary colour vest, and tie. Keep everything subdued, remember you are basically wearing a kilted business suit.

The two gents to the right side of the photo is what I would consider to be acceptable business attire. Hard to go wrong with a charcoal gray jacket and waistcoat also. I know you aren't currently wearing a tie, but I would consider doing so in this case. IMHO the tie really brings the whole look to a very smart finish.

No, that's not a Filson vest. I actually picked that vest up at Target for $24.00. For the price it's very well put together. I'd rather have a Filson, though.

I am still learning about some of these smaller details. In my mind I was seeing a regular three button sleeve. The buttons would be what you might find on any suit jacket, but not silver. There would be no epaulets, and regular pocket flaps.

In other words, if you were sitting at a table, you would look no different than any of the other people in suits.

By "American thing" I was thinking back to a discussion on how the kilt is not used as daily attire in this way by too many Scots. It can get mixed up with the black tie discussions in the back of your mind sometimes, as well.

I'm fortunate in that the place I work is casual except for the odd dress up day so I've not yet had to wear anything in between casual and really posh.

When I do, it won't be with a jacket or a tie, more likely a good shirt and waistcoat with a cravat.

Quite correct. Waistcoats are often worn with jackets in Scotland and often jackets are unadorned with military "extras". In fact, all the gentlemen in this photo are correctly dressed. You will note that Maclean of Dochgarroch is the only one wearing a jacket with Argyll cuffs, scalloped pocket flaps and epaulets.
