What tartan?
So here's my dilemma. Whilest pondering a kilt purchase, I hought I would try to do something a little more traditional (not sure why as I've never done that). Anyway, I thought I would stick with a family tartan except... my mother's side of the family is Wallace and my fathers' side is Robertson, whose do I choose? Would it have been more likely that a son would've chosen from the mothers side or would it have mattered at all?

Traditionally you would go with your father's tartan. However, it doesn't really matter which you choose. Pick the one YOU like the best.

Yes, you have an embarrassment of choices with just those two!

I had this problem. I could take the MacCormick tartan for myself and my father (although we spell it McCormack) or I could take my mother's tartan Fitzgerald.
After a divorce and other stuff, I am so much closer to my maternal grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald), I wouldn't dream of NOT owning a Fitzgerald Hunting tartan kilt.
I placed the order a few days ago with Scotweb. It is kilt #2 (#1 is Royal Stewart).
Also, Fitzgerald Hunting rocks the MacCormick tartan.

In short, it was a mix of aesthetic and personal reasons that influenced my decision.

Personally IMO it doesn't matter! But if you are going to pick a tartan due to familial connections and like both tartans equally, choose according to the family that we feel more akin too.
Also, as I have said before, in time you will just have to buy another kilt to honour the other side of your family, oh dang!

In my case, it was a no-brainer as my Mother is Scots. However while my Father's surname is English to the core, his Mother was Irish, her Mother was Scots (Leslie), my Father's paternal Grandmother was Scots (Ross) and on my Mother's side are two Grandparents with the name of Boyd.
If the Money Gods smile on me enough, I will eventually probably get all three others.

Thanks for the input, it does help. Soooo, I'm gonna go with moms' side first, then dads'. After that it'll be whatever catches my fancy.
