Best way to store a kilt
I was once told that the best way to store a kilt is to roll it up and put it in a drawer or cedar chest (which is more preferable). I have seen that rolling a kilt up is the way to pack it, but wasn't sure if it was the best way to store it. Supposedly it hold the pleats better than hanging it does, and it help in the prevention of moths. Do you all have any preferences?

Others will have different preferences, but I store my kilts (traditional 8 yrd) on a kilt hanger. It's just a bit longer than the dress hangers that you might buy in a store. The kilt hanger holds the kilt pleats well, IMO, and it's easy to just take the kilt out of the closet, put it on, and hang it back up when finished wearing it.

Non-wool kilts: I fold in half, then in half again and clip using a stout kilt hanger.
Wool kilts: I started the "roll and put in a dresser drawer" method and have really come to prefer it for my nicest kilts. If I had room I'd store them all this way. Seems to keep the pleats in order, and no surprises (I used to pull a heavy kilt out of the closet only to discover in hanging I had stressed and wrinkled some of the pleats or an apron edge.) Seems like I rustle around in there frequently enough to keep it aired out and moths away.

My Gran used to store kilts rolled up in a pair of old tights. She reckoned it maintained the pleats and kept the moths off.

One of the first things I did in my new house was to put cedar panels in one of the closets, and hung all of my kilts in there. To keep them hanging straight, they're on kilt hangers from Stillwater.

I don't have a lot of room for storing things in my little aluminum cottage... A waterheater takes up a quarter of my closet and everything is in the large zip up garment things that have hanger bars and frame wires inside of them.
That being said, I have my kilts hanging with the two hanger, Wizard of BC, clip hanger system. My acrylic kilt and cotton kilt are covered by the vests that I use with them. My wool kilt is hanging from it's two hangers, and the hangers are hanging from the pants bar of the jacket and waistcoat's hanger for that kilt... Kind of like if it were a suit with pants.
When I hang any of them up, I smoothe over all the pleats and aprons to make sure they are hanging correctly. I also don't plann on always having the wool kilt hanging from the hanger of the jacket, but at the moment there just isn't any room left. I used to have a rolling clothes rack , but it was metal and got bent.
I miss my rolling clothes rack...

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I highly recommend these. It lets them air out between wearings, an I have never had any trouble of the pleats getting messed up. The hangers are long enough that they clip on approximately 1/3 of the kilt's total width. (I have a 37" waist and 42" hips.)

I don't recommend storing your kilts at all. Buy them, wear 'em once, and send 'em to to me. :-D
