Review of the Brown, Lewis Kilt Hose from Scottish Tartans Museum
* Picture removed. *
The Scottish Tartans Museum's brown, "Lewis Kilt Hose."
* I have mixed up the turms in this description. What I call a cable pattern is actually the ribbing, and the pattern at the top of the hose is the cabling. Thanks for pointing that out Matt. *
We all have heard they are great, so what can I add... Well, here is the neat thing. Starting at the foot, the sole and foot area is noticeably more dense than my other hose. You really can feel the tighter, denser knit. The deep cable pattern *ribbing* is on the top but not the bottom of the foot.
On the leg of the hose, this cable pattern *ribbing* is continued around the circumference. However, the leg part of the hose is not as densely or tightly knitted. Still, it is very substantial compared to my other hose.
Then there is the top... At the point where the hose are folded over there is a distinct ridge around the outside of the hose. I have no idea how these are constructed. Above the ridge, the knitting is denser again.
The pattern on the turned over side of the top is somewhat three dimensional; almost like a relief sculpture. The diamond-like pattern is defined by high ridges, but there are other raised areas and textures... Very interesting and quite fancy feeling. They really are high quality kilt hose.
Thank you to the Scottish Tartans Museum and Matthew Newsome.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Ted,
Thanks for the great review. I'm so glad you are enjoying them, and I do have to say they look splendid with your outfit!
If you don't mind me clarifying some terms, just so people are not confused. Then pattern you describe on the leg of the sock is actually ribbing, not cabling. The pattern on the cuff of the sock that you describe in some detail is cabling.
The ridge you describe at the point where the cuff turns down, I would assume to be the join. The sock base and the cabled cuff are knit as two seperate peices and then joined together, so I would guess that is what you are noticing there.
You look sharp -- wear them in good health!
Matt

Thanks Matt, and I will put a note in the first post about the mix up of terms. My apologies.
I am very happy with the quality of the hose. The ridge being a join at the cuff makes sense. I wanted to say that it felt like a seam of some sort, but I didn't know how all that worked. It is on the outside of the hose, so it is covered when the top is turned over, and would only be seen if the cuff is turned up.

My Lewis kilt hose are definitely my favorite and most comfortable hose that I own, of course i only own 4 pairs of kilt hose, but they're the most worth the money, and they wash very easy too.

Yes, they are high quality hose, and absolutely worth the price. You know that as soon as you feel them.
There is also a wide range of colors offered, so give them a look.

Hope you do get a pair, BoldHighlander. That cable pattern on the cuff is very impressive to me. Although, they really don't cost much more than two pairs of regular hose. Not bad at all for a dressed up outfit, and I do think they add class to an outfit.
Good Luck.

Man, I want a pair of those! They look all nice and warm. They're on my Christmas wish list- at the top.
And, Ted, you have one killer look there!
