Brian, i havent seen a decent bonfire since i moved north, they don't tend to do them in Auckland.
Fire works are only on sale for 3 days now, including the 5th, not allowed to sell them after...and the rockets are gone to...

Some years ago there was a TV program that did an experiment to see if the two tons of blackpowder would have actually destroyed parliament. The program staff could only get hold of a ton and a half of black powder and after the explosion, under test conditons, in a building and using test dummies the effect was devastating! Very few people would have survived unscathed-----if they would have survived at all!

Remember remember the fifth of NovemberGunpowder treason and plot
 I see no reason
 why gunpowder treason
 Should ever be forgot

Memorable more for its bad poetry than its history, a true example of an event going from bad to verse - but the skies of Britain will be thick with smoke tonight, and thousands of pounds worth of low explosive will be hurling sparks and streamers skywards.

for anyone remotely interested there is full poem and not just that verse along with a couple other choice one's, please remember this is historical and from the 1600's, don't think you will find many people singing all of the verses nowadays :-).
Have to remember the historical content, the King was protestant, and Guido Fawkes, was catholic and it was to overthrow government and re-establish the catholic faith.

Please to, remember the Fifth of November,
 The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
 Why the Gunpowder Treason
 Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
 Three-score barrels of powder below
 To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

A penny loaf to feed the Pope
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A fagot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
 Hip hip hoorah!
 Hip hip hoorah hoorah!

An alternative variant of one of the verses, or possibly an addition?

please to remember, the fifth of November,
 Gunpowder, treason and plot!
A stick or a stake for King James' sake
Will you please to give us a fagot
 If you can't give us one, we'll take two;
The better for us and the worse for you!

 Another charming little ditty

 Guy, guy, guy
 Poke him in the eye,
 Put him on the bonfire,
 And there let him die.
