Flying in a kilt

Or rather... flying in an airplane wearing a kilt.

I had to take a trip down to Savannah last week for some military business and decided to wear a kilt on the flight. I dislike flying at best but figured at least I could be comfortable.

I was back and forth a bit on which kilt to wear. As much as I love my USA Kilt, the cut is such that flashing incidents are much more likely than with the UK. Also, the ample pocket space of the UK appealed to me for flying.

Now I used to be a screener for TSA, I spent a good amount of time working the metal detector and I KNEW that the snaps on the UK would set the metal detector off. If a chew can lid will, then all those snaps surely will.

I was wrong. The snaps on the UK don't set off airport metal detectors. May not be enough metal in one spot to raise an interest.

I did wear a sporran. I know it has been debated elsewhere, but I like wearing a sporran with my UK. Cargo pockets are good for things like books, chew cans, etc but for wallet, boarding pass, MP3 player and whatnot, sporran is much better. Also, when I went through security, I could throw my watch, ring, keys and change in the sporran and send everything through at once.

The response in Savannah was better than expected. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to Molly Macphersons. Wanted to, but it wasn't in the cards this time.

Its good to hear that eveything went well for you on your travels its much nicer to hear that than negative incidents.
I myself am making a journey by train next week and i am considering being comfortable in my kilt doing it and positive's like this even though you were flying

Cool! Good to know the snaps on the UK didn't set off the metal detector. Can you imagine, "Sir, you'll have to remove the skirt and pass it through the x-ray device..." LOL!

Wow! That's neat to hear. Not that I could ever get my husband to wear one, but I think he's starting to realize how exasperated I get that he sets off every metal detector every time we travel, as he insists on wearing a kilt every time.

Last June I was flying from Phoenix and noticed a guy in a UK ahead of me in the security line. I thought, "wow, that's the third guy I've seen in a UK (or similar) in as many months." Good to see. Actually added to my thinking about getting a kilt.

I don't recall that he had any trouble going through security.

A UK is on my want list.

I don't know about a UK (since I only wear tartan), but if you wear a tartan kilt you might want to think trough a small thing: I flew from Scotland, via London and to Norway two weeks ago. As usual I did wear my kiltpin. In Scotland it was fine, in london I had to wait for them to telephone their boss to approve I was wearing it because of the sharp ende, treathning object, etc. Back in Norway I can't even fly with it attached to my kilt. So be a little carefull when wearing a pin, and have a backup plan in case they stop you.

Otherwise, flying with kilts are a very plesant experience.

I'm having Rocky make a 5-yard wool kilt for me but with velcro instead of buckles. Without the buckles I figure the kilt won't set off the metal detectors.
