Finding out how closed minded my best friend is.

Well I'm still trying to decide if I am making a SWK Black Watch my first kilt or if I am ordering a MacPherson Modern from someone here in the states.... So I finally asked my best friend if he would be seen in public with me wearing a kilt... After a long pause, he said that maybe if we lived in a big city. He thinks that with all the rednecks here that I'd just be asking for trouble. I can't decide if he is really that afraid of some of the smucks in our little town or if he is afraid of being seen with a guy in a dress lol. I do not think I'll have a problem here, but you never know. I'm looking forward to my first outing, but as it stands now it will not be with my best friend.

Sad to say...I'm sure that you'll find that a lot of us have had similar experiences with friends...I know that I have. My buddy Bill got all weirded out about the kilt and came up with one of my favorite lame excuses: "...maybe if it was red it would look more like a kilt and less like a skirt." Good one, eh?

And don't think that people in a city are any more liberal minded about it than the folks out by you. They're not.

Best thing that I can suggest is just to do it, do it well and while kilted just act like it's absolutely normal...don't look for attention, when people ask about it don't get into any long winded explainations...just make them accept that it's the norm by acting that way yourself...that seems to work the best for me. Best of luck...I know that it's tough to have someone that you counted on to drop out like that.

He will eventually get used to it. Just remember "it takes a real man to wear a kilt." Besides, women really like to see kilted men.

I think he's more concerned for your safety and he might be a little embarrassed b/c it's a bit of a shock to his system. Try wearing it to somewhere where he and you will be in a 'crowd' the first time you wear it around him (a party perhaps?). Once he sees the positive attention from the ladies and the positive comments from random guys, he'll turn his opinion around.

The First places I wore mine around my friend Steve was up in Bath PA (VERY redneck) to a bar. I had a spare kilt in the car, but my friend REFUSED to wear it and begrudginly sat beside me in 'my skirt'. After we were in the bar for 15 minutes and were approached by a GROUP of women out at a bachalorette party, he quickly changed his mind and begged me to run out the car to get changed into the other kilt. Funny how that works.

Well we've been friends since 1st grade and out of all my friends from school, he's the only one that has attempted to stay in contact with me... So yes, other than my wife, he is my best friend... But I think he is not very secure in his manhood and threatened by anything that might be considered "gay". Hehe, I even sent him some of the picts of the board of kilted guys and the women they attract.

All I can say is that if the emo skateboarders here wearing that hideous skirt/kilt thingie from Hot Topic aren't getting beat on a daily basis, then I do not think I'd have any problem with it (I do not go to any of the seedy bars around here anyway lol).

Yes , this is typical for many. It is better to make this journey alone if you can't count on a friend or spouse to support you. Their reaction and the way they carry themselves while in public with you kilted has a very real effect on how others will react to you. If you want to wear the kilt and it's too much for your friends to handle, you will have more success on your own rather than being with people who will just jump on the bandwagon when the teasing starts. At least then you know who the "enemy" is when you start poking back.

Talk about the potential of picking up women as a major motivator to wear a kilt....

It is unfortunate that people seem to be stuck on the misconception that a real man must wear pants, never cry, etc...

Hehe, the wife seems all for it... I may have to take him up to Morgantown, which is one of our larger cities the first time and do our normal walk of High Street (where some of the decent shops and restaurants are), I think there is still a pub there we can stop at and then to the mall. Let him see that people could care less for the most part.
