The 5 year period has ended, but it may be some time before I attempt to join again. I owe it to my deceased father to try again.

The rules governing Freemasonry require that a member (or potential member) profess a belief in a supreme Deity. If, as a pagan, you do not believe in a single, all powerful, supreme being, then you would not meet the most basic basic requirement for admission into the Masonic fraternity.

Since I had only done one rite or whatever they call them as a Mason, I can't speak with any authority. But... I can think of reasons that underwear may come into play, more about hygiene than modesty. Perhaps there is a costume or special dress that you may need to wear, but it would be unhygienic to not have underwear on. Perhaps you could be asked to don a ceremonial robe or something, I don't know. Think back to the initiation you had, before learning from the book before getting the lambskin...

I have no understanding of the Masonic lodge or the beliefs and codes. And I certainly have problems with authority figures making demands upon dress.
But in this situation I think I would wear somethign under and avoid any possible hassles that may come up. You don't want to put a wrinkle in the ceremony or your friend's night.

And I celebrate my return by discussing . . . yet another "should I wear briefs" thread!
 Freedom is as freedom does.

 There is no absolute.

If, as I understand, there are British/UK military regulations concerning the wearing of undergarments with a kilt, and IF the situation is one that falls under British/UK military regulations, then, by all means, cite the regulations.

If it is a matter of personal preference, then one must ask, "what does standing on my rights gain me?" and "what does standing on my rights cost me?"

I am not a Mason, tho my grandpap was, and my father. If I was a Mason, and if I was invited to raise a Brother, and if I valued the Masonic virtues . . . I might be tempted to keep a civil tongue in my mouth, and comply with their wishes.

Note: I am, somewhat famously, willing to go to hell itself on a dare, or to prove a point, but there comes a time when one must ask, as I mentioned earlier, "What do it cost me" and "What do it gain me."

One question I would put to you: does wearing undies make you less a Scot? Less a man? Less a Mason? I ask not in the spirit of conflict, but with an open heart, wishing you all the best, for you and your friend, and for your fellow Masons.

(And bear in mind: I COULD BE WRONG!)

Myself, I would get a jock strap and a blue ribbon. That way if anyone checked you comply, but only by half.
Also if asked, what makes anyone believe that you wear something under your jeans?

ALL of the responses were appreciated. For those that have studied Latin my signiture line would let them know that the bits are always covered. Why anyone on this earth would want to see 56 year old bits is beyond me. It was just the idea that the first thing the guy said was that I "had to wear something under the kilt". And who will verify, if at all. I wear the kilt proudly. I also sit in Lodge proudly. The few times I have worn the kilt to Lodge, there have been no problems and no questions. I will wear the kilt. I will have the bits covered. I will take the crap given out. I will keep my dignity. I just hope I can remember t he passwords.
 Party On
