On the surface, this doesn't seem to be a negative comment. I know its been awfully chilly here in PA lately, so maybe she had some concerns about your bits and pieces...?
It's good to see your wife coming around. This may be a large change to her, and slow acceptance is probably a good thing.
Be patient and let her know gently that this is something you want to do. She'll most likely come around when she sees how much you enjoy it.

My question is, how do folks know who / what kind of folks shop at Wal Mart unless you see them there - making you, what? People who shop at Wal-Mart. Ignorant comments can come from Nordstrom and Macy's as well.

I got lucky, my wife bought me my first kilt.
We went out shopping today and it helps to have support around. The others are correct, avoid the places with the ignorant folks. But, if you are going to go to those places go in large numbers. I don't think they would make foul comments to a kilted group.

Oddly enough, it is my wife who has suggested that I wear a kilt. I have had the ceremonial family tartan kilt for a couple of decades; but when she saw men wearing kilts downtown Seattle (quite a lot in Utilikilts, etc.) she said I looked sexy in my kilt! SO, it's off to the kiltmakers for a wardrobe update.

Well it was snowing out...
it was more of the drunken laugh that went with it.

One of my first public wearings was at Wally-land lots of turned heads but no comments, not the most friendly stares but what do you expect from a small town of rednecks at the Wal Mart.

I think most spouses usually come around. I've been a full-time kiltie for over 3 years so my wife doesn't expect me to wear any lower garment accept a kilt. She had some issues at first, but now likes the way I look in a kilt.
Being out and about with your wife while kilted helps. She gets to see that it's usually a non-issue, and many people will actually be complimentary. We shop at Wal-Mat frequently, and I've yet to have a bad experience there. I usually wind up in a conversation with someone about kilts, ancestry, and so on with my wife reminding me that we have shopping to do.
Hang in there.

Please do not take this as judgment, it is from my experience and probably only relevant to my experience.
I have put up with cracks and comments. "Skirt" this and "skirt" that. Very frequently they were from non-malicious ignorance.
Some people have thought I was cross-dressing. Some people have thought I was pretending to be a caricature Scotsman.
Generally---generally, mind you----I say something like "yes it is a skirt, a special kind of skirt, a skirt that was and is worn by the men of Scotland" and generally---generally, mind you---when I take that tack people are understanding and supportive.
This tack has worked well with people who might, otherwise, not be hip to the kilt, like devout Muslims or African-Americans. "I am honoring my forefathers," politely stated, can go a long way.
And if YOUR WIFE is coming around, then, what does it matter what outsiders think?

What has helped in my home, with my wife, is when she has her girlfriends around- they tend to respond very positively, and I think that has been attitude changing for her.
But as others have mentioned- it takes time.

The test is that when I give her my holiday list, there will be a kilt on it.
