    Actually, it does happen here in the States quite a bit, just not formally. If you go out into the rural regions, many places are still known as "The Johnson House" or "The Hendricks Place" or some other similar appellation. And the locals will know these designation without knowing the official address.

    Often these places will carry this name for a while, even if another family moves in. The name just changes to "The Old Johnson House." For example, you would have the Smith family that lives in the Old Johson house.

    There's a town in Tasmania called Doo Town. Its only a small village, but most of the houses are named with some variation of Doo:
